Careers at ESnet

The ESnet team at an all-staff retreat in January 2024.

Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) is a high-performance network built to support large-scale integrated scientific research. ESnet serves more than 50 Department of Energy (DOE) research sites, including the national laboratory system and scientific instruments, supercomputing, and other user facilities, as well as connects to more than 270 research and commercial networks in five countries. By offering a highly specialized, continuously evolving networking infrastructure and innovative services, ESnet enables scientists to collaborate on some of the world’s most important scientific challenges.

ESnet is funded by the DOE and stewarded by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA. Its primary offices are located just above the UC Berkeley campus, but ESnetters are spread across five time zones. ESnet (and all Berkeley Lab) employees are part of the University of California system and enjoy UC’s terrific healthcare and retirement benefits

ESnet’s staff have diverse backgrounds and work in many different areas, including software, infrastructure, testbeds and prototypes, planning and architecture, network services, the network operations center, cybersecurity, science engagement, and business operations.

Student Internships at ESnet

Every year ESnet offers graduate, undergraduate, and high school students the chance to work alongside our engineers and R&D scientists to address challenges in high-speed scientific networking. The ESnet Student Internship Program brings in students in summer, fall, and spring for a 12- to 16-week paid program offering the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience.

The ESnet Summer Student Internship Program is now open! (Posting closes May 31.)

In addition, ESnet participates in Berkeley Lab’s Computing Sciences Area Summer Student Program and the Department of Energy’s SULI Internship and CCI programs. ESnet also participates in the Experiences in Research (EinR) six-week program for high school students, offered by Berkeley Lab’s K-12 STEM Education and Outreach division (learn more: ESnet’s EinR Summer Interns Are Visualizing Their Path to a STEM Career).

EinR applications are also now open and are due April 1: learn more about the projects, which include one for ESNet.
